Once upon a time a lovely and expecting couple sent us an email that went something like this: “Hello. We’re pregnant and we live on a boat. We’d like to travel the world and use gDiapers. Can you help?” We said yes and launched our gDiapers: On Location blog series, a space dedicated to real families using g’s in unique living situations across the country (and beyond!). Jess, James and their baby girl, Rocket, have been traveling the world and riding the waves of parenting, all while striving for a sustainable lifestyle aboard their sailboat home. We are so honored to be sailing with them through their adventures. Read on for where they’ve been, and what (and who) lies just up ahead on the horizon.

You know how there never seems to be enough time? It moves so quickly! Babies grow before our eyes, information whizzes through our brains, and our bodies transform in a flash. What if you could slow it all down, even just for a moment, would you?
The gDiapers team has been participating in Earth Hour since its inception in 2007. It was created as a lights-off event to raise awareness about climate change, a cause near and dear to our hearts. One hour, once a year, when individuals, organizations and even countries slow it down, turn it off and just … unplug. One hour. No TV. No laptop. No streaming audio or video. Just the space you’re in with the people you want near. And do you know what’s particularly special about that one hour? It’s a moment, slowed down. And that moment can be truly powerful.

As I write this post, I am sitting on a plane en route to Kilimanjaro. I am catching my breath from the whirlwind of the last few weeks and find I’m pinching myself that this is actually happening. Every Mother Counts, g, Tanzania. These aren’t random pieces of a marketing strategy or socially responsible programs that were chosen by focus groups. This is the manifestation of people, issues and places that I have been passionate about my entire life.

Just like our babies who seem to grow up so fast, our little company is also growing up. That’s right, we are 10 this year. That big milestone into double digits that says we aren’t so little anymore.

Two physical activities that should not happen simultaneously:
Being in labor. Walking up to 26 miles.
I couldn’t imagine walking across the living room when I was in labor, so the idea of having to walking up to 26 miles to seek emergency care in that physical and mental state is beyond comprehension. Yet this is the reality for countless women around the world in medically underserved regions. Even more alarming is that a woman dies every 2 minutes due to complications around pregnancy and birth, and astonishingly 98% of those deaths are preventable. When our son Fynn learned about these facts, he summed it up perfectly by saying, “If they are preventable, then WE HAVE TO help prevent them.” And I couldn’t agree more.

Growing up I thought my mother made the best butter on toast in the entire world. Even now when I visit her, it warms me from the inside out. It’s not extravagant or fancy, and I’ve been able to butter my own toast for a long time now. But, for some reason, mine never tastes quite like hers. She always laughs and says it is because it’s “Made with Love.”
And I absolutely believe this to be true.
Love is a defining ingredient for life. At g, we do our best to put love into everything we create.  From products that touch your babies to the relationships we have with our vendors, we believe in the power of love and intention. Fortunately, love isn’t defined by perfection. But that’s the point. If something is “Made with Love,” there is beauty and meaning to be found within the imperfection.
