Babies big and small: a gMum interview on diapering
You’re a first-time mom snuggling a tiny, frog-legged bundle. You’re a mother of two under two, with one chunky, short infant and one long-legged sprinting toddler. No matter where you are on your parenting journey, finding the right way to diaper your baby can be tricky. So we got some advice from gMum (and gDiapers employee) Kelda about diapering her three-month-old son Kaj and now four-year-old daughter Juniper.
Before your babies were born, what was your approach to finding the right diaper?
Like most moms, I was in major research mode. I knew I didn’t want traditional disposables. I bought a bunch of different brands and figured I would learn what I liked as I went along. The first time I used gDiapers was on a big, long road trip when Juniper was three months. They worked great! Even though one time I put one on backwards with the “g” on the front. Ha!
After that, we were sold. I even came to work for g a few months later! People generally get six to twelve pairs of gPants for each size, but I didn’t want to do as much laundry, so I doubled that. We prefer to use disposable inserts because you can flush or compost them [wet ones only], and we always have about two weeks’ worth on hand.
How was the sizing different for both of your babies?
Juniper was our huge, huge, chunky baby. Ginormous. Kaj is big, but shaped differently. It’s funny, they weighed about the same, but Kaj is in a size small at three months whereas Juniper was in a medium by three months.
We started Kaj right away with the newborn gPants, which are phenomenal. They’re easy, don’t leak, and so tiny and cute. And they’re a great entry into the system.
Another thing that was different was having a girl and boy. We’ve experienced a few more leaks with Kaj, maybe because the inserts get more saturated in front while with a girl, it gets spread out a bit more. With Kaj, the back of the insert is always dry. I think the key is to just change a little more frequently and make sure the position is right.
As with all things parenting, the trick is to really pay attention to what’s happening with your baby. They like to keep you on your toes! Especially when they’re really little, they are a new baby every two weeks. Are they going through a growth spurt? Are they eating more? So be flexible and allow for some testing to figure out what’s right for you.
Have you had any issues with gDiapers?
Since we’re on-the-go parents, we really push the limit on our diapers. Especially when the kids are in their car seats for a while, we may see a red line from the diaper from the pouch trim because it was compressed against the thigh, not the crease (where it’s supposed to be). It’s not alarming, the baby isn’t bothered by it, and it’s not a rash–it’s just like what you get with a bra or pants.
For my babies, g’s work so much better than any other brand we’ve tried (of course, I may be a little biased). With other brands, we’d get the worst blowouts. All over the onesie, down the leg, up the back … with g’s, we’ll get the same amount of mess, but it all gets caught in the pouch instead.
Do you have any advice for parents learning how to diaper their baby?
Figure out what you like because there’s no right or wrong way. YOU are in control. gDiapers are designed to be as flexible and unique as you and your baby. You can own it. You get to design the system to work for you.
You’re diapering your baby 24 hours a day. And it’s a steep learning curve. But it’s also another great way for you to get to know your baby and to really boost your confidence as a parent.
