Every pair of gPants has a story…
As I look back over the 99 pairs of gPants we have created, I can’t help but reminisce over the details of each story. For the vast majority of them, Mimi, Karen and I would start looking out into the world to see what inspired us for the next season. We would go back through our trusted files of things we had collected over the years to see what might be the perfect fit. We all loved this part of our jobs, and as the collection would start to take shape, we would be giddy with excitement for the final sign-off and the much-anticipated photo shoot. The company’s mission may be around the Disposable Inserts, but the company’s heart and soul is in the pants.
What inspired gCamper?
Of course there is the obvious theme of nature and the outdoors (which is very ‘g’), but this gStyle set came together around two original elements: the playful phrase “I’m having an environmental movement,” and the Umpqua Bank painted image. We were inspired by the design and feel of the bank art. It was fresh and fun, while still being sophisticated. We looked for a summer plaid for the gPants to pair with the shirt, and loved the idea of a white base with blues and greens. The scale of the plaid on Harper’s hat seemed perfect for the size of our gPants so Mimi worked off that piece of art to create our own. I have so many favorites and gCamper is definitely one of them!
The shift in gBloom…
We never seem to be short on design ideas, but it is easy to get carried away and over-design. Part of making a pair of gPants successful is not only the design, but making them hit our price point.
gBloom started out as a stunning multi-colored, three-dimensional concept: flowers cut from colorful cottons and sewn on, and printed gWords running throughout the background, all on an expensive heather grey base. When we pared it back to bring down the cost, we found we actually preferred the simpler print to the original. Mimi mocked it up a number of different color ways and it looked gorgeous in all of them! We choose blues for gBloom but always planned on bringing it back with a fresh twist. We altered the spacing and scale, incorporated the pink and red color scheme suggested by 7-year-old Hadley (g graduate and adorable daughter of gTeamster Heather), and launched the new look as Gerbera Daisy this spring.
Let us know which stories you want to hear because every pair of gPants has its own unique story of how it came to be. I love reminiscing and am happy to talk gPants design all day long :0)
Good luck designing the 100th pair of gPants!
Cheers,
