Why we do this.

August 1, 2012

This was posted on our facebook page today, and, well shoot, there are 18 pairs of eyes here at gHQ that are a little teary right now. We make a cool product. We 100% believe that to be true. But what we believe in 150% (at least) is the power of genuine human interaction. Mom to mom. Mom to Dad. Dad to Dad. Parent to Parent. Baby to Baby. People to People. The stories that sprout from our connection are what will send this world spinning on a most beautiful and inspiring course toward being greater than we could have ever imagined.

Lisa gave me permission to share her comment here.

people. planet. we go together in a pretty great way sometimes.

I happen to be a huge fan of the late Hunter S. Thompson. And one of my favorite lines of any literature is this:

“Our energy would simply prevail. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill [in Las Vegas] and look west, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark – that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.”

It comes to mind every now and again and I find it has multiple meanings. Sometimes it’s a way of saying something good almost happened but didn’t; it also says, to me, that something terrible tried to happen and was defeated.

Our generation is staring down a possible real-life Wall-e situation. Humans have been in the process of making our planet unlivable. But somewhere, all over, people started to think that was a bad idea. And it hits us where it hurts most to think of our kids; we imagine living in buildings constructed of the most plentiful building material of the time- trash. Then my littlest got a rash- that got worse and worse. And worse. I went looking for answers and came up empty handed, with more questions. I quit using the national brand type disposable, and went looking for alternatives. I embarked on a “not quite plastic-free” lifestyle. I wanted honesty, transparency, safety and quality from the items we used daily. I didn’t know it at the time, but what I wanted was Fair Dinkum.

Somewhere along the way I met gDiapers…. And I loved them from the start. I got to learn all kinds of “green” things as I met other people like me. People like Melissa and Kristi. People like Anne who took up the cloth diaper habit after me. People like Amelia, whom I have never seen in person, but who checks in on me from time to time. Normal people with high standards and a keen eye.

gDiapers have started conversations with strangers. More and more, I see the conspiratorial smiles of other parents who are refusing the old and embracing the new. They may not be gMums (yet!). But they are out there. The movement has a momentum all its own. The wave of wasteful, Earth destroying trash that threatens us may still not crest for many years. But I believe it will.

Someday I hope to look back on the last 2 1/2 years and think of how amazing it was to see the movement gaining strength. To remember that I was there, with those people, riding the pendulum as it swung back the other way.
