Leading the global diaper industry into the Circular Economy
Last week at the Ellen MacArthur Foundation CE100 workshop in Catalonia, gDiapers co-founder Kim Graham-Nye gave an impactful speech to the CE100 members. She challenged the major diaper manufacturers, most of whom were in the room, to commit to circular economy solutions:
“If we are committed to stopping plastic pollution at the source,
If we are committed to leaving fossil fuels in the ground,
If we are committed to true circular solutions …
Then we must stop making diapers out of plastic and make the shift to compostable materials."
Our gCycle initiative lead a CE100 Co-Project, along with PA Consulting, London Waste & Recycling Board, Topolytics and Cranfield University over the last 18 months.
Our co-project set out to deliver a replicable and catalytic model for a circular solution to diaper waste that included:
- the delivery of our new compostable diapers
- the collection of the used product
- and the regeneration of the used product into valuable resources
The final report, A Blueprint for a Circular Economy solution to Nappy Waste, outlines the various considerations and questions for each component of gCycle – deliver, collect, and regenerate.
It showcases eight different regenerative technologies that have been approved for gCycle compostable nappies. The options vary from large-scale plants requiring space, investment and significant management to the most basic hot composting bins that can be placed in any community garden and require very minimal maintenance. There are options for every situation from temporary refugee camps to major international cities.
