Wash, wear, repeat. Laundry day made simple.

January 28, 2016

Are you daunted by all the laundry that grows with your baby? Adding hybrid diapers to your laundry routine may feel burdensome, but it doesn’t have to be.

If you’re new to washing diapers (or even just want a refresher!), check out our g User Guide for full instructions on how to properly care for your gDiapers. Then read on for some tips we’ve learned from you, our customers, as well as our own little ones to make things a bit smoother.

Let’s start with the gPants. These only need to be washed when they are soiled or at your own comfort level, and can be reused without laundering in most cases. The snap-in pouch is the part that will need to be washed most often – if it’s just wet, a quick rinse is generally all you need, but if it’s soiled, it probably needs a more heavy-duty wash.

For disposable inserts, you’ll be flushing, composting (wet ones only), or tossing these, so laundry is even simpler. You can save even more time by tucking the inserts into your freshly washed gPants so they’re ready to grab and go.

For cloth inserts, taking a bit more care with them will make things easier in the long run. Check out our g User Guide about cloth for all the details on how to wash them. Here’s a helpful tip: for even faster drying, throw in a big dry towel with your cloth inserts in the dryer.

And bonus: you can lay the cloth liners on them to reduce messes and make laundry day even easier.

Diaper storage before laundry day

There are two methods for storing soiled diapers: dry pails and wet bags. For dry pails, just remember that baking soda is your friend.

And if you’re using a wet bag (a waterproof bag specifically used for soiled diapers), make sure to read your bag care instructions first, but most you can toss in the washer with your diapers. So simple.

Detergents to consider

When first learning about cloth diapers, people often get scared of the idea of having to “strip” cloth inserts if they start smelling or getting less absorbent. (And actually, we have some helpful tips on stripping, should you need them.) But if you follow simple guidelines, you can avoid having to do this very often. Don’t let it worry you.

Luckily, gPants are just like any other clothing, so you can use any detergent you want. For pouches, the same detergent is fine, but don’t use bleach, vinegar, or hot water, as these things will compromise the special waterproof fabric. If you’re also washing cloth inserts, you’ll want to look for a cloth diaper friendly detergent (which is pretty easy to find!).

Just remember to use about half of what you’d normally use on a regular load of laundry. With just a little bit of detergent, the hot water and washing machine are surprisingly enough to disinfect your diapers. Also, using a second rinse cycle helps get the detergent out of the diapers.

We love hearing tips from our community on how to make laundry day easier. Diapering shouldn’t be a daunting task. With the right tools and tips, you’ll have it down in no time.

Check out our g User Guide for more care tips, and let us know if you have any you’d like to share!
