Hemp History Week! (and why we care)

May 30, 2013

Thank you to our marketing manager, Doe, for giving us this homegrown backstory.

Hemp. Eat it. Wear it.

Hemp? Yup. We know what you’re thinking. So let’s get the elephant out of the room now: hemp is NOT cannabis. It’s NOT marijuana. And if you use our cloth inserts, your baby has benefited from the breathability, absorbency and the antibacterial properties of one of the earth’s most sustainable fibers. Next week, we’ll be joining the Hemp History Week campaign, the national grassroots education campaign designed to amplify support for hemp farming in the U.S.

Hemp’s been given a bad rap because of its cannabis cousin, but this fast-growing plant provides eco-friendly textiles, healthy food and body care products, as well as things like auto parts and building materials. Unlike cotton, hemp does not require heavy doses of pesticide in the fields. Here at gDiapers, hemp is a fiber that we would love to use more in our products, but limited supply and high prices are barriers for production. Why? Because despite hemp’s growing popularity, an outdated and misguided Federal policy – created in the 1930’s – currently prevents US farmers from growing this nutritious, versatile and eco-friendly crop.

Next week there are lots of chances to get involved with Hemp History Week events across the country. On June 4th here in Portland we will be hosting a special Oregon premiere of “Bringing it home”, a documentary film about industrial hemp and a home designer’s quest to find the healthiest materials available to build a safe, indoor environment for his young daughter, who has a sensitivity to synthetic chemicals. Joining us will be friends from Prana and hemp foods producers Manitoba Harvest. Event details are on our facebook page.

Here’s to taking steps toward products that support a healthy future! Check out all the ways that we could be benefitting on a large scale from this amazing plant. http://hemphistoryweek.com/whatishemp.php
