The Truth About Mother’s Day
Happy Mother’s Day, mamas! We hope you spend your special day in bed with a hot cup of coffee, and your little ones showering you with love and appreciation. But what if you don’t?
What if you’re reading this on your phone while bouncing a fussy baby on your hip, and your lukewarm coffee sits on the counter?
What if you’re spending the day with a sick kiddo who needs more TLC than you do right now?
What if you’re celebrating your own mother by telling her now you understand just what it means to be a mother?
Mother’s Day has a long history of honoring mothers, sending cards and flowers, going out for brunch as a family. Mothers around the world are celebrated—sometimes on different days and often in different ways. In the UK, you are given flowers and a special treat called Simnel cake made of fruit and marzipan. In Mexico, you enjoy tamales and atole, a hot sweet drink made with cinnamon and thickened with corn flour. In Japan, you get sushi and carnations. In Germany, you may eat Rote Gruetze, a cake made with fresh cream and strawberries.
No matter how or when you’re celebrating, that first Mother’s Day as a mother really is bittersweet. There is so much to celebrate. So much to honor. Every day you get up and care for your new, growing family. Every day you give so much. So taking one day and making it just about you feels almost strange and unfamiliar. But it’s important.
It’s important to remind yourself that you matter. Your work matters. You are part of a tribe of women around the world spanning generations who understand and appreciate what you do every day. Who get it.
So enjoy your coffee. Savor that handmade card. Sniff those flowers a little longer. You are honored. You are important. You are loved.
